government
Robert Mugabe
The type of government used in Zimbabwe is a parliamentary democracy. In this government, they have both a President and a Prime Minister. Also, elections are done by popular vote. In 1980, Robert Mugabe was the elected to be the first Prime Minister, and he served in that position for 7 years. Then, in 1987, the position of a Prime Minister was taken away, so Mugabe became the second president of Zimbabwe. The president before Mugabe was Caanan Banana. When Mugabe took the position of president, he gained more power. He was misusing this power he had from being the president. He was re-elected in 1990 to serve another 6 years. Then, he was re-elected again in both 1996 and 2002. In Zimbabwe, presidents are only allowed to serve three terms, but in the 2008 election Mugabe was elected once again to be president. This was claimed to be election fraud, and because of the uproar it caused, the position of a Prime Minister was brought back to keep Mugabe from having so much power. This position was filled by Morgan Tsvangirai. This helped to stabilize the government.
